Bus Pledge to Support Communities

The Labour Government has consistently championed fair funding to ensure better services across the country, and I am pleased to see this commitment materialising in the form of £27 million earmarked to improve bus services across Kent and Medway. This significant investment will enhance popular routes, safeguard rural services, and increase bus use for shopping, socialising, and commuting. Importantly, it is intended to prevent service reductions on at-risk routes and improve reliability for all.

Despite this positive development, bus services for my constituents in rural communities remain inconsistent, amounting to a postcode lottery at best. The 155 service, which previously provided a vital connection between Chatham and Maidstone, has been reduced to only reach Borstal. While Nu-Venture has attempted to fill the gap with a smaller service, residents have repeatedly raised concerns about its irregularity and unreliability.

The loss of this extended 155 route has left many constituents, particularly those in rural villages, struggling to access essential services, employment, education, and social opportunities. It has disproportionately impacted those who depend on public transport the most, including older people, young commuters, and families without private vehicles.

I urge Kent County Council and Medway Council to prioritise the reinstatement of the extended 155 bus service, using the additional government funding to restore this crucial route. Doing so would align with the objectives of this investment by enhancing accessibility, boosting local economies, and ensuring fairness in public transport provision across our communities.

These funds can address the urgent need for improved bus services in Medway and Kent’s rural areas.
